Thriller Live, the much-awaited musical has finally arrived in Sydney after successful performances in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland.
It is showing in the Lyric Theatre in Star City Casino up to 15th March 2015. Fil-Aussie Broadway Superstar MiG Ayesa together with an amazing cast bring on stage all-time favourite Michael Jackson’s music and dance moves.
At the Media Call on Friday, 27th February 2015, MiG and selected co-stars and dancers showcased three numbers from the show. They impressed members of the media with their rendition of Jackson 5 disco classic Show You the Way To Go; chart blockbuster Billie Jean with lead vocalist Sean Christopher doing Michael’s signature moves and Act 1 closing number: Can You Feel It. Afterwards, they happily posed for photographs and did interviews.
At the interview for Radio Tagumpay and Radio Sandigan, MiG expressed his appreciation of the support of the audiences who have watched the show in the various states it had been staged. When MiG was asked what was the best part of being in Thriller Live, he said: “This is my home town. The show is allowing me to reconnect with my family, my roots and my friends. This is a special homecoming for me as I have been away for some time. And to come back with this special show, which I am passionate about, to Sydney is wonderful.”
Of the preview show held on 26th February, MiG commented: “Last night was amazing. We had a fantastic full house. They were so into it, dancing in the aisles from the start. I feel this is much love for Michael Jackson. I am looking forward to the whole season in Sydney. I think it is going to be amazing.”
MiG also invited Sydneysiders to the show. He said: “Please come along and see Thriller Live. Come along sing a song or two with us and join the jamboree as we celebrate the time and life of Michael Jackson. Come and join the fun.”
True to the ‘prediction’ of MiG, Sydneysiders who attended the show’s official opening of the Sydney season on the evening of 27th February, had much fun. The show delivered the fans’ expectations and more. It started with a flash back to the time of Jackson 5 featuring the first four number one songs – I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save and I’ll Be There.
The audience was dancing with most of the songs on the aisles or jigging on their seats. Some were also singing along with their favourite songs. Some of the songs included in Act 1 were I’ll be There, Blame it on the Boogie, Dangerous, Off the Wall, Get on the Floor, Rock with You, Don’t Stop till You Get Enough”. The standout numbers of Act 1 are the haunting rendition of She’s Out of My Life by MiG and the energetic group number Can You Feel It as its closing number.
After all the standing ovations, boisterous cheering and dancing, the audience welcomed the intermission to have the needed drink and break but happily returned when the re-start bell was rung.
Act 2 brought more Michael Jackson hits which got the audience all the more involved. Prinnie Stevens of The Voice Australia fame worked relentlessly with MiG and the other lead vocalists Alex Buchanan, Sean Christopher, Wayne Robinson, Samantha Johnson, and J Rome. The energetic and stunning choreography, together with some special effects on stage, carried through from the previous act to the end. More favourite Michael Jackson songs engaged the crowd – these included Beat It The Way You Made Me Feel, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, Thriller, Bad and Black or White.
After most of the songs, there were more standing ovations, whistles and loud cheering by the audience. It was late in the evening but several people waited to say hello to the performers as they emerged from backstage. Despite having spent more than two hours of energetic performance, the stars happily chatted and posed for photos with the fans.
MiG might be huge in the music world but his feet are firmly anchored on the ground. He is like any other son who has been away for some time, loving being back home just as Sydney is showering him back with much love.
