Fil-Aussie Marlisa Punzalan’s rendition of ‘Super Love’ on Sunday September 28 was given the big ‘thumbs up’ by her followers.
They expressed their appreciation by voting her to stay in the XFactor in the Top Five as announced on Monday September 29 during the elimination round.
My friends in the Filipino-Australian media (Michelle Baltazar, Charles Chan, Romy Cayabyab and his wife Verma), my husband John and I were very fortunate to get the opportunity to attend the ‘decider’ show.
The process of getting the audience take their assigned spots – in the “mosh pit” converged at the front sides near the stage or in the seated theatre layout area – was very efficient and orderly.
We were ushered onto seats assigned for family and friends of contestants. The set, sounds and lighting were impressive. There was a very good “warm up” guy who kept the audience entertained, and who like a maestro could prompt the audience to applaud and cheer at the right time.
It was great to see the judges – Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Dannii Minogue and Redfoo – and compere Luke Jacob. The audience was entertained by three sets of performers before the results of the votes were announced.
There was a very tense atmosphere in the studio just as Luke Jacob read out the names of contestants, not in order of total votes received. There was much cheering from Marlisa’s supporters in the audience when she was the second contestant to be called as ‘safe’ in the Top Five.
This was not a surprise for those who follow closely the reality singing competition. Marlisa sang “Super Love” from the heart and gave a powerful performance. It was worth noting that she looked very comfortable in her attire which also reflected Dami’s off-beat and funky style.
After Marlisa sang “Super Love”, Dami Im – 2013 XFactor winner who composed and recorded the song – posted her approval on Twitter. Dami tweeted: “So proud of you @MarlisaMusic!! Loved your performance xx #SuperMarlisa #XFactorAU”.
The social media was abuzz with positive comments about Marlisa’s performance of the song. As usual the most comprehensive and informed comments were by Gareth McCray, radio broadcaster, journalist and qualified on music and theatre. TFA thanks Gareth for agreeing that his comments are shared with its readers.
Excerpts from Gareth’s comments: “Super Love” is an infectious pop song that exceeded, again, all expectations. Radiating positivity, love and happiness “Super Love” showcased the fun and upbeat side of Marlisa. The no complex dance beat was perfect for radio with her big vocals and yet controlled so they didn’t take over completely – great control. Rowan is correct and Danni Minogue is incorrect – her runs were excellent. It is not always enough to be able to hit a note to take a song to the next level.”
Gareth predicts a music career for Marlisa, regardless of the outcome of the competition. He added: “With a gravity defying reach, Marlisa has the ability to lift a song from its platinum selling originator and give it a new dimension with not only her vocal strength but also the subtlety she has in her vocal range. Given the right songs and record producers, we are on the verge of seeing the next international superstar in Marlisa with a voice that could capture the whole world…”
Gareth’s also urges the fans to act accordingly: “Marlisa brings this to the stage her talent is undeniable, however it is no sufficient to sit back and be amazed as she has some real competition from at least 2 of the other acts – this means you have to get up from the TV and VOTE!!! If we fail to do this then her growing bright star will not make it to the end.”
We were all happy that after the show, we were able to meet up with Marlisa and family to congratulate her and have photos with her.
The competition is only a few steps away from the final stage and for the winner to enjoy a recording contract and all the trappings that go with it.
With Marlisa’s talent and humility being rewarded by continued support by her followers, we are hopeful that she stands a good chance of achieving that.
